"Each form of violence has its own way of contaminating, haunting, touching, caressing, and whispering to the other. Their force is particular yet like liquid, as they can spill and seep into the spaces that we carve out as bound off and untouched by the other."
Tiffany Lethabo King, The Black Shoals
Shoals (Untiefen) – much like archives, – are a spaces of paradox, shallow and deep at the same time.
Departing from archival images in the genre of type-photography, a mode of depiction meant to flatten, this work seeks instead to recover and layer the image itself.
Employing natural dying techniques like wax-print, indigo- and cola-dye, this two-piece series highlights the need to reimagine the individuals we uncover within colonial archives.
